Au cinéma le western a toujours été un genre très populaire et ce dès son apparition. On peut considérer les années cinquante comme l’apogée du genre.
Cette décade a livrée de grands classiques comme "Le train sifflera trois fois" (1952), "L’homme des vallées perdues" (1952), "Johnny Guitar" (1954), "La prisonnière du désert" (1956), et j’en oublie d’autres.
Pour cette période ont peut citer maints réalisateurs qui auront marqués le genre, je pense notamment à Delmer Daves avec "La flèche brisée" (1950), un des tout premier western de cet époque qui prenait posistion en faveur de la cause des indiens ( très inhabituel à l’époque ! ). On lui doit aussi "La dernière caravane" (1956), excellent western avec le toujours talentueux Richard Widmark, "3h10 pour Yuma" (1957) et "La colline des potences" (1959).
D’autres metteurs en scène ont réalisés des films magistraux dans les années cinquante. Anthony Mann pour sa remarquable série de films ayant pour vedette le sobre James Stewart : "Winchester 73" (1950), "Les affameurs" (1952), "L’appât" (1953), "Je suis un aventurier" (1954) et "L’homme de la plaine" (1955). Il réalisa également "La charge des tuniques bleues" (1955) et "L’homme de l’ouest" (1958) avec Gary Cooper.
Comment oublier le fabuleux John Sturges et son "Règlement de comptes à O.K.Corral" (1956) avec le duo d’enfer Burt Lancaster-Kirk Douglas !, ce dernier tournera un autre classique avec Sturges "Le dernier train de Gun Hill" (1958).
D’autres réalisateurs très talentueux sont aussi à mentionner, parmi ceux-ci : Robert Aldrich avec "Vera Cruz" et "Bronco Apache" en 1954, le vétéran John Ford pour "Le convoi des braves" (1950), "Rio Grande" (1950), et surtout le célèbre "La prisonnière du désert" (1956) déjà cité plus haut. Raoul Walsh, réalisateur confirmé lui aussi, avec "Les aventures du Capitaine Wyatt" (1952) et ses redoutables indiens Séminoles, "La brigade héroïque" (1954), Howard Hawks et son cultissime "Rio Bravo" (1959), John Huston pour son très émouvant western "Le vent de la plaine" (1959), Edward Dmytryk et son magnifique doublé "La lance brisée" (1954) et "L’homme aux colts d’or" (1959), Henry King avec "La cible humaine" avec un attachant Gregory Peck dans le rôle du meilleur tireur de l’ouest condamné malgré lui à être défié par des prétendants ! et le sombre western, toujours avec l’impeccable Gregory Peck, "Bravados" (1958).
Je citerais de même King Vidor pour "L’homme qui n’a pas d’étoile" (1955) avec un Kirk Douglas plus cabotin que jamais ! Richard Brooks, le talentueux réalisateur de "La dernière chasse" (1956), Bud Boetticher pour des westerns comme "A feu et à sang" (1952) et "Le traitre du Texas" (1952), Otto Preminger et son mythique "La rivière sans retour" (1954) avec la non moins mythique Marylin Monroe.
Les vedettes des westerns de cette époque sont principalement l’incontournable John wayne, Gary Cooper, Kirk Douglas, Glenn Ford, James Stewart, Richard widmark, Burt Lancaster, Alan Ladd, Gregory Peck, Rock hudson, Robert Taylor, Jeff Chandler, Audie Murphy, Robert Mitchum, Anhony Quinn, Randolph Scott, et j’en oublie sûrement beaucoup d’autres !

Actually, this retelling of the life of outlaw Jesse James is only as true as its predecessor, the highly fanciful 1939 Tyrone Power-Henry Fonda starrer Jesse James. Generous chunks of stock footage from the earlier film are reused here, albeit reframed to accommodate the CinemaScope process. Robert Wagner makes an interesting James, though he is upstaged throughout by Jeffrey Hunter as his brother Frank. Adhering to the Canon, the film insists that the James boys were forced into a life of crime by greedy railroad men -- hence, their ongoing vendetta against trains. Director Nicholas Ray adds a few psychological nuances not found in the more prosaic 1939 film. John Carradine, who played "dirty little coward" Bob Ford in the original Jesse James, appears in the remake as Rev. Jethro Bailey.

The powerhouse combination of star James Stewart and director Anthony Mann score another cinematic bullseye in The Naked Spur. Stewart plays a taciturn frontiersman who loses his home while he's off fighting the Civil War. To raise enough money for a new grubstake, Stewart becomes a bounty hunter in Colorado territory. His first quarry is fugitive, killer Robert Ryan. Stewart's efforts to bring in Ryan and collect the reward are compromised by the presence of Ryan's loyal girl friend Janet Leigh and Stewart's two disreputable sidekicks, wily prospector Millard Mitchell and disgraced Union-officer Ralph Meeker. There's plenty of "cat and mouse" byplay between Stewart and Ryan before the brutal climax; the drama is intensified by the fact that both men are on the outer rim of total insanity. The Oscar-nominated screenplay for The Naked Spur was cowritten by Sam Rolfe, who was later one of the creative forces responsible for the similarly no-nonsense TV western series Have Gun, Will Travel

A small Kansas town braces itself for the arrival of the first Texas trail herd. The marshal (Robert Ryan) expects trouble from the herd drivers, who'll be thirsty and lascivious after months on the trail. The town's saloon owner (Robert Middleton), anticipating a business boom, wants to remove the marshal and thus leave the town wide open. The marshal can expect little help from his deputy (Jeffrey Hunter), whose father was killed by the lawman. The Proud Ones builds slowly to an explosive climax, in which the deputy chooses the right side and Law & Order is maintained.
Richard Widmark once again essays a character who could be either hero or heel in the rugged western The Last Wagon. After cold-bloodedly shooting down the three men responsible for the death of his wife, Widmark is captured, chained up, and thrown into a wagon heading eastward. Soon afterward, the wagon train is attacked by Indians; the only survivors are Widmark and a group of orphaned children. Freed from his shackles, Widmark proves he's made of the right stuff by shepherding the children to safety. Marred only by a too-pat ending, The Last Wagon is one of the best of the Delmer Daves-directed westerns, as well as an excellent showcase for such "new talent" as Felicia Farr, Susan Kohner, Tommy Rettig, Nick Adams and James Drury
Don Murray stars as a humble cowboy with aspirations for bigger things. He borrows money from his dance-hall girlfriend Lee Remick to buy a ranch, then dumps Remick in favor of banker's daughter Patricia Owens. Murray runs for political office, and in so doing is compelled to join a posse in search of his best friend Stuart Whitman, who has turned rustler. Anxious not to compromise his climb to the top, Murray stands by in silence as Whitman is lynched. In the end, however, Murray regains his essential decency when he is shot while trying to protect his ex-girlfriend Remick from bullying land baron Richard Egan. Based on a novel by A. B. Guthrie Jr., These Thousand Hills may look and sound like a western, but it has "film noir" written all over it.

Warlock offers us a mean-spirited, mercenary Henry Fonda and an honest, peaceloving Richard Widmark. A Wyatt Earp-like frontier marshal, Fonda agrees to protect the small town of Warlock from an outlaw gang, but only if he's permitted to plunder the town's cash reserve. Widmark, the town deputy, is a reformed outlaw whose willingness to fend off the invading criminals is motivated by his fondness for his new neighbors. Looming large in the proceedings is Anthony Quinn as the glory-grabbing Fonda's sidekick. Adapted by Robert Alan Aurthur from a novel by Oakley Hall, Warlock is a good example of the "thinking man's westerns" prevalent in the late 1950s-early 1960s.
