Qui est le Docteur Who ?
Il s’agit d’un extraterrestre, un Seigneur du Temps, originaire de la planète Gallifrey, dont il a été exilé par son peuple. Il voyage à travers le temps et l’espace et dispose de la particularité de pouvoir se régénérer, expliquant ainsi ses différentes apparences…
Au départ, la série se voulait avant tout éducative et son objectif était d’apprendre de manière ludique l’Histoire aux jeunes britanniques. Mais, la Science-Fiction pris le pas assez rapidement.
La série est apparue pour la première à la télévision britannique le 23 novembre 1963 et ne s’est arrêtée qu’après 26 saisons, chacune composée de 3 à 6 épisodes formant un feuilleton.
La BBC, qui avait promis que la série reviendrait après son arrêt en 1989, produisit un téléfilm en 1996. C’est finalement en 2005 qu’une suite directe fut produite. La nouvelle série dispose actuellement de 4 saisons composées cette fois d’épisodes de 45 minutes. En France, seules les trois premières saisons de la nouvelle série sont sorties en dvd, sans les épisodes spéciaux.
A noter que beaucoup d’épisodes de la première série sont perdus car la BBC avait, à l’époque, l’habitude d’effacer ses cassettes y pour enregistrer des nouveaux programmes.
