Christopher Morris - 2010 |

A handful of young men set out to take on the decadent West but are more of a threat to themselves than anyone else in this black comedy from the creator of BRASS EYE, Chris Morris. Omar (Riz Ahmed) is a devout Muslim living in the United Kingdom who has decided to form a terrorist cell to bring forth a jihad against a culture he believes is dominated by the sinful and ignorant. However, Omar isn't much of leader, and he's assembled an unimpressive team of fellow terrorists, among them Waj (Kayvan Novak), who lacks the brainpower to come up with ideas or direction on his own; Faisal (Adeel Akhtar), who is shy and doesn't have much to say; and Barry (Nigel Lindsay), a recent convert to Islam who tries to make up for his lack of practical knowledge with fierce passion. As Omar and his comrades debate both doctrine and methods, they ponder such notions as using birds as explosive devices, creating video communiqués with a hip-hop flavor, and attacking mosques in an effort to provoke non-violent Muslims. But are Omar and his partners a legitimate threat to the safety of Great Britain, or just four half-bright twenty-somethings with more bluster than imagination? |

Heroic earthling Flash Gordon saves the world from the nefarious Ming the Merciless in this lavish, intentionally campy adaptation of the famous sci-fi comic strip. The story is as basic as space operas get: Ming (Max von Sydow) has developed a plan to destroy the Earth, and Flash (Sam J. Jones) and his attractive companion, Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), are called upon to stop him. Along the way, Flash must battle Ming's goons and the temptations of a luscious space princess. Previously the basis for a more straight-faced 1930s adventure serial, Flash's story is mined here for exaggerated, cartoon humor by screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr., a central figure in the similarly campy '60s Batman television series. The simplistic plot mainly serves as an excuse for spectacular sets and cartoonish action sequences, all set to an appropriately over-the-top rock score by Queen. Certainly not a film to turn to for serious excitement, fine performances, or character development, Flash Gordon has nevertheless developed an appreciative cult of fans who admire the film's humorous approach and the detailed, colorful production design. |

Dong Hun - 2010 |
Action |
Street Date 31/08/2010 |

Asie-Corée du Sud |

Ghostbusters gets a unique Korean twist with the fantasy action blockbuster Jeon Woo Chi: The Taoist Wizard. Writer-director Choi Dong Hun departs from his popular heist films Tazza: The High Rollers and The Big Swindle for this big-budget, special effects-filled action romp that was equally popular with the Korean audience, earning over six million admissions over the 2009 Christmas period. The star-studded film featuring Kang Dong Won, Lim Soo Jung (Happiness, A Tale of Two Sisters), award-winning actor Kim Yoon Seok (The Chaser), and Yu Hae Jin (Truck) has proven to be so popular that a spin-off comic book series is already in the works. Based on a Korean folktale, Jeon Woo Chi stars Kang Dong Won, who has quickly become one of Chungmuro's biggest stars with this film and Secret Reunion, as the titular character, a mischievous magician in the Joseon era. Framed as his master's murderer, Jeon and his dog are imprisoned inside a scroll by three wizards until 2009, when he is freed by the wizards to battle evil goblins in the big city. The trouble is that Jeon is more enthusiastic about his new home and womanizing than his appointed assignment. |
