Kenji Misumi - 1966 |
Fantastique Asiatique |
Street Date 09/01/2007 |
Publisher: Image Entertainment |
USA |

Bigger than Godzilla! Badder than Gamera! In 1966, the Daiei Motion Picture Co. had reached its creative zenith. Riding high on the success of its Gamera franchise, the studio released a trilogy of high-quality period films (made and released in the same year) that centered around a giant stone idol that comes to life to defeat evil warlords terrorizing innocent villagers in feudal Japan. Two years later, American-International Television (AIP-TV) released two of these films, Majin, Monster of Terror (originally Daimajin) and Return of Giant Majin (originally Daimajin Ikaru), to American television, professionally dubbed into English by Titan Productions. Much like Toei's The Magic Serpent, the Majin films effectively combine traditional samurai swordplay with incredible special effects, making them a must-see for anybody interested in Japanese cinema. Just when you thought the AIP-TV versions had vanished for good, Retromedia Entertainment plucks them out of obscurity and brings them to your home. Don't adjust your rabbit-ear antenna; forget switching to the nearest UHF station; all the nostalgic fun you need is right here on this disc! |

Mark Neveldine - 2006 |
Action |
Street Date 09/01/2007 |
Publisher: Lions Gate |
USA |

Screenwriters and directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor make their feature-film debut in this fast-paced action film. Freelance hitman Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) wakes up with a big problem; a DVD left in his apartment by smalltime gangster Ricky Vanero (Jose Pablo Cantillo) tells him that he has only one hour to live. While Chev was asleep, Vanero injected him with a deadly synthetic drug from China--known as the Beijing Cocktail--as payback for Chev’s last hit. Now, Chev’s only hope to stay alive is to keep his adrenalin pumping. Dead set on revenge against Vanero, Chev also has to keep his girlfriend, Eve (Amy Smart), out of the mob’s hands. To complicate matters, naïve, sweet Eve has no idea that her charming British boyfriend is a hitman. Even worse, Chev’s boss, Carlito (Carlos Sanz) has no intention of helping his favorite freelancer. |

Richard Donner - 2005 |
16 Blocks |
Action |
Street Date 09/01/2007 |
Publisher: Metropolitan |
USA |

A hard-drinking, hard-living cop assigned the task to transporting a small-time criminal to the nearby courthouse finds that a simple, sixteen block drive can be the longest ride of his life in director Richard Donner's urban action thriller. Hung-over, has-been cop Jack Mosley (Bruce Willis) has seen better days, and all that the force expects out of him these days is to stay out of trouble while he's on the clock. Eddie Bunker (Mos Def) is set to testify before a grand jury at 10:00am, and it's up to Mosely to make sure that Bunker makes it to the courthouse in one piece - a job that Mosely estimates will take a maximum of fifteen minutes. A black van has been trailing the pair unnoticed though, and after stopping off at a nearby liquor store to pick up some breakfast, Mosely emerges from the store just in time to save Eddie from the lethal bullet of a determined assassin. When backup arrives in the form of Detective Frank Nugent (David Morse), Mosely quickly realizes that the detective on Nugent's team is the same cop that Bunker is set to testify against. Now faced with the tough task of dodging bullets and eluding a massive onslaught of corrupt cops, Mosely must keep Bunker alive long enough to get him before the judge and ensure that justice is served. |

Neil LaBute - 2006 |
Horreur Anglo-saxon |
Street Date 03/01/2007 |
Publisher: Warner Home Video |
USA |

Neil LaBute's THE WICKER MAN stars Nicholas Cage as Edward Malus, a policeman thrust into some dangerous detective work by a series of strange events that begin with a horrific car crash. This incident leaves the cop haunted, with images of the accident replaying in his heavily medicated mind. Edward's hiatus from work is interrupted when he receives a mysterious letter from his ex-fiancé, pleading with him to help find her missing daughter, Rowan. Against his better judgment, Edward travels to the remote, privately owned island of Summerisle, home to a close-knit, secretive community with a clear dislike for outsiders. Considering Edward an intruder, the Sisters of Summerisle offer little information regarding the missing girl. Edward is at a loss, finding even his ex-love Willow to be little help. With vacant eyes and a strange, listless way about her, Willow should be the first of many red flags to send Edward running. But in firm horror-movie tradition, the seasoned cop throws caution to the winds, staying in the place longer than seems smart. This 2006 remake veers away from the 1973 film in several key ways. For one, it replaces the original's eerily upbeat folk soundtrack with a tasteful Angelo Badalamenti score. With a mild PG-13 rating, the 2006 version is relatively tame compared to the original. While the 1973 film freely mixed pornographic elements with horror themes and musical numbers, the new film confines itself to horror, abandoning that strange mixture of genres that made Anthony Shaffer's film a cult classic. While LaBute's film adds a back-story and romantic interest, it requires equal suspension of disbelief. Despite their differences, both films end in the same disturbing way, leaving an indelible image that may haunt viewers long after the credits roll. |
