Kimika Yoshino returns in this prequel to 'Wizard of Darkness' to play Misa Kuroi before she was famous, or at least before she realized she was a witch. 'Birth of the Wizard' begins in Meiji-era Japan, in a village of former witches and wizards. I say former, because someone seems to have slaughtered them. Skip to the present day, and an archaeologist discovers a mummy from the village. Blissfully unaware that the mummy is, in fact, possessed by an evil spirit (naturally), he runs off, leaving his assistant alone. The mummy comes to life, kills her, and the evil spirit takes over her body. This evil spirit is now searching for Misa, who is protected by Kyle Reese, It is Misa's destiny to defeat this evil spirit, but she needs Saiga's help to do it. (imdb) |

With its duelling wizards, cackling demons, fabulous costumes and aerial sword-fights, The Yin-Yang Master recalls that other ancient martial arts spectacular, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Directed by Yojiro Takita the film is set one thousand years ago in the ancient Japanese capital of Kyoto (where the film was shot on location). There, mortal men live side-by-side with demons, which can enter human hearts and minds. At The Mikado’s court, wise soothsayers control the demons with spells and incantations - these are the Yin-Yang Masters. The most enigmatic of these is Abe no Seimei, a sly fox of a sorcerer, who astounds with his magic and flouts court rules. Under his wing comes his new apprentice, the eager but naïve Minamoto no Hiromasa, and one of the joys of the film is watching their master-servant relationship evolve as they wander the ancient city, Seimei working his magic to solve supernatural crimes. Their main task, however, is to identify a new defender who will emerge to protect the city from the forces of evil, personified by the revivified spirit of Prince Sawara. |

When a movie opens with a scene of a crucified woman being speared through the heart, sending a geyser of blood shooting into the spearman's face, and that's followed by a scene of a screaming woman buried up to her neck in the dirt getting her head cut off by two guys with a crosscut saw, it's a pretty safe bet that the movie is by Tokyo's Emperor of Extremism, Tesuo Ishii (Shogun's Joy of Torture, Oxen Split Torturing, Yakuza's Law). This time out the Master of Mayhem gives us a hellish whorehouse of tattooed tarts (complete with cool black light body art) and an absolutely amazing ending where a woman is tied upside down between two bent saplings and the ropes are cut simultaneously causing her to be split in half down the middle while flying up into the air! |

Harry Kumel - 1971 |

MALPERTUIS: HISTORY OF A CURSED HOUSE (MALPERTUIS: HISTOIRE D'UNE MAISON MAUDITE), 1971, 125 min. Director Harry Kümel's surrealist cult classic has been more talked about than seen since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 1972, when it was shown in a hastily shortened English-language version which distributors subsequently hacked down even further. Now the Belgium Cinémathèque Royale have worked with Kümel (best known for the lesbian vampire classic DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS) to produce a definitive "director's cut," Dutch-language version of over two hours - longer than has ever been seen before, and giving its labyrinthine story far greater clarity and depth. Of course, to "explain" MALPERTUIS or to reveal its final twist (for there are constant surprises in store at the conclusion) would be to spoil the fun. Based on the famous fantasy novel by Belgian writer Jean Ray, most celebrated for his Harry Dickson detective stories, the film (written by Kümel and Jean Ferry) follows the handsome young sailor Yann (Mathieu Carrière) on his return home to the family mansion of Malpertuis where his dying Uncle Cassavius - Orson Welles in ripe form - has summoned his relatives for the reading of his will. Once inside Malpertuis, a haunted house of endless corridors and hidden chambers, Yann finds it impossible to escape, and he is entranced by three young women there: his cynical sister Nancy, the lubricious Alice and the exotic Eurvale, all of whom are played by an unexpected, sensuous Susan Hampshire. Filmed in luscious color by Gerry Fisher and a with a haunting Georges Delerue score, MALPERTUIS is a dream film unlike any other, and can now be seen in its full glory. With Sylvie Vartan, Johnny Halliday. (Notes by David Thompson, courtesy of B.F.I.) (In Dutch with English subtitles.) |
