The classic Nicolas Gogal fable THE OVERCOAT is given a European flavor by Italian filmmaker Alberto Lattuada; some consider the film to be Lattuada's best psychological study. Comedian Renato Rascel plays a nebbishy nobody who spends his life-savings on a fancy overcoat. Suddenly, the nobody becomes a somebody, proving beyond doubt that clothes make the man. And then one day, the overcoat is stolen...Fleshing out the short-but-bittersweet Gogol original are several colorful new characters, including a publicity-hungry small-town mayor, played by Giulio Stival. The background music was composed by director Lattuada's wife Felice. American prints of IL CAPPATO are missing a so-called naughty telephone exchange between the mayor and his silken mistress.
inger. After having been abruptly fired, she leaves with her only fan, a young naïve girl known as the cricket (Clio Goldsmith). On the road as prostitutes, they meet Annibale (Anthony Franciosa), and decide to help him with his road stop for truckers. The place is named "The Cricket" and business goes well, so that Wilma ends up marrying Annibale. Then Saveria (Barbara De Rossi), the 18 year old daughter of Wilma, arrives: she is a prostitute too and starts a chain of events that will end up in tragedy.
A May-December romance. Roué Giulio Marengo, a Roman landscape architect unhappy in his marriage, meets Francesca, a young and beautiful Florentine, and then learns she might be his daughter. He resolves to keep his hands off but can't seem to stay away, and she's eager for a lover who's a father figure. He's happy to be a kid, so he tries to find out who her father is; his wife knows something is up; his daughter, who's Francesca's age and is pregnant, encourages the affair. Should he tell Francesca his fears that it might be incest? If he tells her and she doesn't care, what next? And what of his wife, who still wants to be married? Francesca takes control
