George (Lovelock, AUTOPSY) is a hippie biker on his way to the countryside for a long weekend holiday. While stopping at a gas station, his motorcycle is accidentally hit by an attractive young girl named Edna (Galbo). The bike is rendered useless, so Edna offers him a ride, as long as they drop by her sister Katie's cottage first. The unlikely traveling companions get lost and stop at a farm for directions. There, George is greeted by a pair of employees from the experimental section of the Ministry of Agriculture as they test a new ultrasonic radiation device designed to drive parasites into killing each other. Meanwhile back at the car, Edna is violently pursued by a crazed man who appears to be already dead. After the agriculturists insure her it was merely the village loon, and the journey continues. Moments before they arrive at the cottage the same man who attacked Edna viciously murders Katie's husband. The police are quick to peg the wife as the primary suspect, and order George and Edna to remain in town during the investigation. As they lose faith in the fascist police force, the couple launches a secret investigation of their own. Suspecting the nearby agricultural experiments may be the cause of this morbid chain of events, they attempt to get more information from a local hospital. The result is a plethora of terrifying confrontations with zombies from the basement morgue--brought back from the dead to feast on the living. |

Esther |
Horreur Anglo-saxon |
Sortie le 27/10/2009 |
Editeur: Warner |

A bad seed with a Russian accent, 9-year-old Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) is a nasty little girl with a nasty little plan. Unfortunately, this malevolent tyke has landed in the home of adoptive parents Kate and John (Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard), an unsuspecting couple with two kids of their own and considerable grief over recent family tragedies. It doesn't take long for Esther to make her creepy presence known, as broken limbs on the playground and torched tree houses can attest. Give this movie some credit--the psychological underpinnings are all set carefully in place: Maternal trauma? Check. Backyard pond as emotionally charged danger zone? Check. Feminist parable about husbands not listening to troubled wives? Check. The casting of reputable actors such as Farmiga and Sarsgaard also ups the movie's class quotient; Farmiga in particular has an emotional workout, and this gifted actress strikes few false notes even as the scenario becomes increasingly lurid. (There's some déjà vu here: Farmiga also played a mother realizing her kid was "not right" in Joshua, a much superior film.) Director Jaume Collet-Serra, of House of Wax notoriety, knows full well the unsettling weirdness of seeing a child commit murderous mayhem, and he presses all the buttons with something like unholy joy. The movie begins to drive off the rails even before a clumsy twist hits the fan near the end, and at that point, the mechanical exercise becomes downright silly. |

This big-screen adaptation of Land of the Lost stars Will Ferrell as Dr. Rick Marshall, a quantum paleontologist who has been discredited in the scientific world due to his strident belief in time travel as the cure for all of humanity's problems. After hitting an all-time low, giving a lecture to elementary school kids, Dr. Marshall meets an ambitious young scientist named Holly (Anna Friel), who tells him she has followed all his work and believes he's a genius. Spurred on by her enthusiasm, he finishes building the device that will allow him to time travel -- something he promptly does along with Holly, and white-trash fireworks salesman Will (Danny McBride), after Will leads them into a cave that seems like a promising place to test the new machine. They end up in a world full of dinosaurs, sand, and scary lizard-like creatures known as Sleestacks. They quickly lose the machine that brought them to this alternate universe, and if they ever want to return home, the trio must recover it with the help of Chaka (Jorma Taccone), the monkey-like friend they make in this strange place. |
